Pianist (and Stanford alumna) Gloria Cheng, celebrated for her imaginative programs and emotionally-resonant interpretations of contemporary repertoire, returned to campus to perform an intimate recital of John Cage's work, as part of Lively Arts' fall celebration of the work of Cage and his collaborator and partner, Merce Cunningham.

Water Music (1952) employs a series of unusual props—a pitcher of water, a duck whistle, a deck of cards, an analog radio—with the score projected onto a screen behind the performer. The Complete Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (1946/8) is a collection of 20 short pieces inspired by Cage's study of Indian music and philosophy.
