MaximsNewsNetwork: 09 August 2010 - UNTV: United Nations, New York - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (9 August) unveiled a new panel on global sustainability that would be tasked with finding ways to lift people out of poverty while tackling climate change and ensuring that economic development is environmentally friendly.

"I have asked the Panel to think big," the Secretary-General told reporters in New York today. "The time for narrow agendas and narrow thinking is over."

The 21-member High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability brings together representatives from government, the private sector and civil society in countries rich and poor, and it will co-chaired by Finland's President Tarja Halonen and South African President Jacob Zuma.

Ban then went on to comment on other issues. When asked if the Flotilla inquiry panel would have restrictions to question Israeli militaries as reported by some media, Ban said that there was "no such agreement," and he added that the panel of inquiry was established under his initiative for the purpose of ensuring accountability.

A decision was taken at an African Union (AU) summit two weeks ago to boost the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in the Ugandan capital, Kampala due to heightened concerns across the continent over the consequences of continuing violence in the Horn of Africa country.

Ban said that his Special Representative Augustine Mahiga, who is due to be there in the next sixty days, would take all necessary measures to ensure safety and security.

Commenting on the UN's former auditor general, Inga-Britt Ahlenius's leaked report criticising Ban's leadership, he said that he did not expect all members states or staff of the secretariat to like his style or policies, "but I am a very reasonable, very practical man of common sense; I do not take much extreme unreasonable policies. I always do right things."

Ban also asked that journalists not take the matter, "as a personal issue." He added that, "I'm the Secretary-General of the United Nations dealing with so many global issues. Let us look at the broader picture."
