when the anolog sticks are showing the arrows pointing down, do you have to move them up and down to get the destroyer to move? or just hold them down?

and im on this part of the game, it blows :/

is there any way to make it go faster when youre using the force on the star destroyer? The problem is when the little ships come and the big one goes back to place.
