In this talk I discuss two Korean Catholics who married each other in the late 18th century but chose to remain perpetual virgins. Though an examination of their lives we can better understand how Catholicism and Confucianism interacted with each other to form the worldview of Korean Catholics. In particular, we will see how the Catholic understanding of martyrdom was recast in accordance with Confucian notions of filial piety. I originally gave this talk at the 56th Midwest Conference for Asian Affairs, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, October 20, 2007.
