We've been feeding birds for many years now - probably over a decade. Sometimes I have mixed emotions about it in that we're providing a cache of food that normally wouldn't be available to them. On the other hand, human activity has destroyed so much natural habitat it's probably the least I can do! The main thing is that if you do create a feeding station it's best to remain consistent - especially in the wintertime when conditions are so harsh. Of course it's no secret that the squirrels love birdseed so this wire cage around the feeder helps keep the squirrels out. However, a lot of birdseed spills onto the ground where we've seen the squirrels, deer, and even fox lick it up. The deer go a step further and will tip the feeder, with their heads, and let the birdseed fall into their mouths!! Oh, another important point is the birdbath - the deer, fox, squirrels, birds, raccoons and other creatures all drink out of it so we always make sure it's full - especially throughout the hot summers...
