Montreal trumpet legend Kevin Dean muses on vintage horns, and their appeal to collectors and musicians. Dean speaks candidly about his struggle to choose between an old and new instrument - the vintage Martin Committee in his hands revealing his current preference. We see and hear Dean try out an unusual period instrument featured in 'Trumpet Impressions', a fine art photographic exhibition based on antique horns (www.intofoc.us). The rare prototype 1930's Conn cornet comes alive in Dean's hands, transporting the viewer, and musician, to an earlier time.

From 'Trumpet Impressions' - A series of 30 fine art trumpet portraits have been masterfully produced by two photographic artists using early techniques; the Cyanotype (a 19th century process using sunlight, shadow and water to create blue impressions), and traditional 20th century silver based black and white. Examples are seen in this film. Directed by Randy Cole.

Kevin Dean is professor, and a founding faculty member of the Jazz program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music (http://www.mcgill.ca/music/).

  • Hi, that cornet has no model number, it's an experimental prototype from the Conn factory. I had a few that I acquired from a collector.
