@nday76 (to nday70...) American's didn't make the Western spelling of "Khmer", it was the French, and if you are French it is pronounced kh-mai correctly. the "er" in French is "ai" sound. So it's not dumb Americans like you say. If you study language and history you'll know the French did it phonetically correctly. Yes Americans say it wrong, but not because they are dumb. (I am both American and Cambodian, and I studied French).
