In my Trip to Costa rica i've noticed that in san jose most taxi drivers are columbian or of some other country but in the smaller towns the local pirates give us a better rate and usally upfront with the price

@TheBonz77 I think you're right. The pirates are good, but it's best if you get the price up front and not wait until you reach your destination.....

I have a really quick story to tell you that happened to my fiance and I one day at the mall in Liberia. My fiance who is from Liberia called a taxi to come get us, when it arrived my 6 yr old said something to me as got in. The guy said to my fiance, "Oh, Americans?" My fiance asked the driver to turn on the meter. He did but it must have been rigged because it charged us before we even left the mall parking lot ! And plus the guy was a douche, he was driving slower than a snail.

Even if the Maria works, it may be rigged. I was staying at Colours Resort in Pavas and taking a taxi every day back and forth to Barrio Amon or Barrio Mexico and the price was consistenly between 6-10 dollars. Except with this one taxi driver who who's Maria showed the same trip to be 16 dollars and the Maria was going up up up crazy fast. Also ask if the seatbelts in the back seat are working. I was in an accident in a taxi last year and was hurt because the seatbelt wouldn't buckle.
