This remains the definitive version with a nod to Barbara Cook. Bernadette Peters is incapable of singing musically and lacks the discipline to keep the melody intact.

Perfection. Not only is the voice consistently gorgeous, but the manner is so sweetly optimistic. This makes it even more poignant than the versions that seem to scream, "I'm really sad and insane." When Dorothy Colins, at the end of the show, said in a deadened voice, "I should have died the first time," and you realized that this dewdrop of a woman has attempted suicide once, it was as if all the air went out of the theatre.

Sorry to comment again, but isn't it amazing that, despite the fact that she is belting or singing most of the song in a low contralto range, her lovely soprano head voice was still there, so that when she sings "I can't grow older", she sounds like a young girl again. Heartbreaking. No-one has been able to equal this.
