It worked for my HTC EVO. I am glad to find a solution, but I wish it would store the calibration. I have to do it each time I restart the compass app.

Nice!! Tried 10 compasses and did not work. Used this method for tiny compass and BAM. Suddenly no jittering and points out the north! Thx

stupid gingerbread....still sucks no matter what I do. Rooting is not an option so i guess i'm screwed.

Works for HTC Desire too. And you don't need to choose "Calibrate" on menu. Just keep open the compass application and do the 8 movement.
