"Piece of My Heart" was written by Bert Russell Berns, best known for his song "Twist and Shout". Erma Franklin released the song on Berns' record label Shout Records in 1967. Berns also wrote "Cry Baby" for Garnet Mimms in 1963. His other classic compositions are "Hang on Sloopy", "I Want Candy", "Tell Him", "A Little Bit of Soap", and "Here Comes the Night". He produced the hit version of "Twist and Shout" for The Isley Brothers in 1962 on Wand Records.
