checked your blog a bit, and what do you do for living in china? sounds very much like a foreign english teacher, who either wanna escape the life in their home country, or didn't know what to do for life, wandering around in China, a country they only heard negative news about in wester countries...

this is very normal for a chinese new year in china, and you sound like you've never experienced this before...many americans don't live in the cities, and they could probably only see the city dynamics in few cities like new york...but China has more than 100 citites dynamic like this...so make the calculation
