An 8.9 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that rolled into the Japanese port of Sendai, engulfing farmlands and carrying vehicles and buildings.

Vast areas in Japan have been left unrecognisable by the devastation caused by Friday's quake and tsunami. The coastline of Miyagi prefecture was one of the worst-hit regions. Police estimated 10-thousand dead among the 2.3 million people who lived in the prefecture, the Japanese equivalent of a state. On Monday, millions of people spent a fourth night with little food, water or heating in near-freezing temperatures as they dealt with the loss of homes and loved ones.

Before the tsunami, Rikuzentakata was home to 24,000 people. After the huge wave wiped out the entire town, 18,000 of its residents are missing.

A powerful earthquake has struck off Japan's north-eastern coast, shaking buildings in Tokyo and forcing people out of their homes. Japan issued its most serious tsunami warning, saying a wave as high as 20 ft could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture. The massive 8.8 magnitude quake struck about 382 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.

  • I am a man who never prays, but for them I shall. May the Land of the Rising Sun live on, and survive though this darkness that has fallen them. May they rebuild their cities, to be twice a great as they once were. May their loyal alies continue to suport them for as long as needed, and then some. And may we never forget this tragety.

  • My school is helping to raise money for this horrible thing, and so far we raised $1,604
