Thanks. Um, I've been studying since 2006, so at the time of this video, about a year. As for how, Princeton University's Chinese program in particular is extremely good. The basic ideas (especially in the beginning) are the following:
1) tones are as much a part of a word as anything else.
2) focus on sentence structures/patterns rather than learning all the words for, say, sports or types of fruits.
