William Schuman (1910-1992)
New England Triptych

I. Be Glad, Then, America

Max Rudolf, conductor
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra

Written in 1956.

Released in 1970.

ClassicalRecords is a Youtube channel where I upload some excellent performances from the LPs in my collection. I'm uploading these LPs because they are either not available on CD, out of print on CD, or just difficult to find.

  • @TheRealmsOfGold In the developing days of hi-fi and stereo, there were yearly advances, much touted by each label, and the more dramatic full orchestral pieces were often recorded to show off the fuller spectrum of sound. I don't remember them all, but the copy writers were busy in those years, names like "Dynagroove' and dozens of others littered the logos of the major labels. At least they got wise to not just another 1812 overture, Thank Apollo!

  • Wonderful recording! Many thanks for posting it!

  • This is terrific—great piece, great recording. I always cringe when the record companies put out something labeled "showpieces," though. It always seems to demean the music a little, as if to say, "This is bombastic enough that you'll enjoy it, unlike the subtler works of Classical Music [note the capitalization] that you're too much of a cretin to understand." I figure, though, that it's a title that ensures sales. Any thoughts?

  • I've always thought Cincinnati & especially Louisville orchestras to be champions of 20th Century American works. Kudos to these ensembles for daring to perform the "less performed", and bring exciting new repertoire to the concert hall. Schuman is a first rate composer and, deservingly, gets a first rate performance here.

  • Long live composers like this! William Schumann had some serious composing skills!

  • Awesome...me lives in Cincinnati and I'm always happy to see, I mean hear vintage CSO recordings! Thanks!
