As we mark the five-year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq this week, we continue to bring you the voices of US veterans and active-duty soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan testifying about the horrors of war. For four days, soldiers convened at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland for Winter Soldier, an eyewitness indictment of atrocities committed by US troops during the ongoing occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War, the event was modeled after the historic 1971 Winter Soldier hearings held during the Vietnam War. [includes rush transcript]

@Joefreiheit I agree Iraq is a useless war that should have never happened. We should leave asap, but while we are there the troops need to protect themselves. Overuse of BS rules of engagement has already cost enough lives i.e. not being able to shoot at the enemy because they are shooting out of a mosque.

@drewren1231 I don't see how utilitarianism is applied in your statement about valuing soldiers over civilians. Bentham and Mill, the first formulators of utilitarian thinking, defined utilitarianism in terms of a "felicific calculus," or an rational method of determining which course of action is likely to produce the greatest positive feeling and least negative feeling among the human population regarded as a whole.
