WTH are u talking about. App. State plays in the FCS subdivision (formerly known as 1-AA). They're both in division 1 just different subdivisions.

Funny thing is that this team lost to Wofford and Georgia Southern later in the season, but ultimately won the national championship over Delaware, whose QB just won the Super Bowl; Joe Flacco.

Essentially it is like a D2 school (at least when compared to FBS). FCS schools don't recruit on the same level as FBS schools, nor do they get the same type of funding. Considering 8 or 9 FCS schools beat FBS schools that year (out of a pretty large allotment of them), it shows that they really don't play in the same league. Calling it a D2 school may be a misnomer, but there is an extreme talent gap between these subdivisions.
