Koreans eat a similar dish made from skate, honguh. The fermentation process apparently removes the poison. I had a piece at a sashimi restaurant during my first ever hwaesik in a foolish attempt to impress my new coworkers. Big mistake. I spent the next day sick in bed. The overpowering taste of ammonia wouldn't leave my mouth for a week.
