ONLY laziness stops folks from using Google. Everly Bros recorded it in 72 and credit Sebastian as the songwriter (BTW, John is ALSO listed as a vocalist on the Everly Bros album). Sebastian relased his version in 74 on his "Tarzana Kid" album. This is a CLASSIC road song detailing both the rush of performing as well as the much more constant tedium of the details of live performance. Jackson Brownes 'Running On Empty" album gave probably the best description ever
Actually, the Everly Brothers recorded it two years BEFORE Jimmy Buffett, in 1972 on their album of the same title. Not sure when or if John Sebastian recorded it himself.

I like the fake stage dive at the very end. Considering what happened last year that was pretty funny.

This is a John Sebastian song. Jimmy Buffet recorded it on his album A1A in 1974. Years before tom Petty.

It's an old Tom Petty song. Google "The Stories We Could Tell" for lyrics
