The monastic community of the ancient Serbian Monastery High Decani is one of the last spiritual centers of Orthodox faith in Kosovo today.

During recent years of ethnic conflicts and in the midst of destruction and terror -- Monastery High Decani has been a steadfast and safe haven for anyone in dire need, regardless of their ethnicity or religious beliefs.

Behind the barbed wires, protected by the KFOR troops and rarely visited by civilian population, this monastic community, nevertheless, lives rich and peaceful life, spreading a "good news", the news ever so important for our troubled time: that the true spiritual life and the ultimate diplomacy is "diplomacy of the heart". It is given in our ability to forgive, to show compassion, and to love one another.

  • 4 - But first of all they should RESPECT each other. And from Albanian part, respecting Serbs also means to respect historical truth, without politicizing it, also by admitting that these monuments are Serbian. All other versions of history are just RUBBISH, invented since 1998-99 just for political purposes. Remember: RECIPROCAL RESPECT IS THE MAIN CONDITION FOR PEACE! A lawn with different kinds of flowers is more beautiful than one with only one type of grass.

  • 3 - Albanians have nothing to do with this story, sorry. Which doesn’t mean that their claims upon Kosovo are not legitimate! They are, since they live there since centuries (having built a lot of their typical Kullas in that region, during 17th century and later). Kos. Albanians should share their sovereignty with Kosovo Serbs, who are also a fundamental part of Kosovo’s historical identity.

  • 2 - The shapes of this church are a mix of Raska-Serbian and Romanesque type, a western style of Middle ages. This DOESN’T mean that it was found as catholic. It was Serbian-orthodox since construction in 14th century, as one of Serbian royal monasteries. Influences of Latin elements are due to the fact that Medieval Serbia had strong commercial and cultural ties with Dubrovnik and its surroundings, like Kotor, where Fra Vita came from (architect who projected the church for the Serbian king).

  • Hello everyone.

1 - I am an architect and an expert of Christian arts, I come from Italy. Reading some comments here, I noticed many historical mystification about the history of this monument. In fact, some people (which I consider of a very low cultural level) claim that this was originally a catholic church (as its shapes would suggest) belonging to Albanian, and that it was later usurped by orthodox Serbs. This is simply FALSE.

  • Maybe books and other orthodox sacred objects need to be moved to safety into Serbia until thge problem will be no more.

Orthodox miracles on my web Page. Click on IoanRomania09.

  • I agree with Ioan Lena this is a perfect example for serbs who are nationalists!
