Hi! Interesting unit you have there! Using a battery to excite the field coil(s) is a higher maintainence method of achieving what a 'self excited alternator' does. Not all use them but they are less costly to maintain. The shaft of the rotor has a small residual flux which, once spinning, is just enough to excite the field(s) and hence, creating output current.....(if that answers 'how can we not used battery'.....
