The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are using random patterns of speckles painted on metal connectors for bridges to better understand how stress and strain could lead to their failure, and possibly, a tragic collapse such as the one in Minneapolis, Minn., in August 2007. • Funny - closing the barn door after the horse is gone - just looking at images of the actual gusset plate before failure in the Minnesota bridge failure case clearly showed buckling - and the adjacent strain gauge rossette (mounted on a thicker member - why didn't the ME see the deformed plate!) clearly not effective.

  • the system used was the Vic-3D system from Correlated Solutions, Inc.
