16 going on 17? I believe this skit was from the third season of the Mickey Mouse Club, and she was fourteen when she was originally hired for the show.

IMHO, Darlene was by far more talented than Annette - she could sing, dance, and act better but for what ever reason, Disney pushed Annette over Darlene.

I always thought Darlene was the most talented of the Mouseketeers, but she didn't have the cuddly-cuteness that Annette has. Annette is very talented, though--just in a different way.

They were right about Darlene, she really was a talented young lady. I thought she sang better than Annette Funicello too.She was pretty in my opinion, but when she grew up, she became bitter about her time on here. I had a book about it, she was cursing and saying nasty remarks about all the producers and the other children. She despised Annette.

Her acting was always "hammy" - whereas Annette didn't try so hard (not to say Annette was a Class A actress!).

Darlene was the overwhelming favorite the first season. However, Annette got the most fan mail & was the most popular - so Disney changed his focus in year 2.

I have read that Disney only got involved in recommending 3 people: Annette, Cubby & adult Roy. All others were picked by committees

In year 2, Cheryl was hired - and surprisingly got the most fan mail of anyone except Annette. So Cheryl was moved into more skits & brought back for Year 3 - which pushed Darlene further down the list.
