Want to start your campfire in less than 60 seconds? Cotton balls and a firesteel can easily accomplish this. The theory is also very useful for survival training, since you can take any variant of very dry moss/lichen that has a large surface area, and use it for tinder as well. Note the lack of accelerants in my videos -- what you see here is just the cotton burning all by itself.
Here's my tutorial on how to get firesteel and tinder working for you. You can also get cotton balls at the store which deliver the same effect, or you can get the cotton from Q-tips. You can also make and use 'charcloth' as tinder, though it may take a little longer to ignite.
