Thats the whole reason they had to "shut them down", along with Public Enemy, Brand Nubian & others from the Golden Age of Hip Hop...these brotha's jus didnt "fall off"...it was a stratgic move by those who own MTV,BET etc...soon replaced with "Gangsta Rap"....Gin & Juice...lolly pop...Bling Bling....Bitches...hoes...clothes....etc...etc...you get the point. This type of music enlightened the listener....God forbid rap music having a message behind it...cant have that in today's society!

there was a law in 1996 called the telecommunications act of 96 that basically gave conglomorates like clear channel ownership of the airwaves. that's why urban radio stations that were competitors became"sister"stations, all under clear channel. then came a position known as an independent promoter. these cats make up tp $900,000 a year! they r the middleman between the record label and the program director at the radio station. there used 2 b a freelance that djs could do in their rotation...

OH, you are EXACTLY right, PREACH ON!!! I used to listen to all the REAL Hip-Hop geniuses back in the day, myself; when you mentioned Brand Nubian I KNEW you know what you're talking about!! You gotta be a genuine, honest-to-goodness OG Hip-Hop Hed like myself to know about the Great Ones. They DID shut em down, 4 speaking the TRUTH same as the Govt is trying 2 do 2 me & my fam. I was in Desert Storm when I was 17 wasn't old enough to VOTE and have MY SAY but was old enough to get sick from it!!

The phasing-out of political Hip Hop artists was due to the change of the market. Music has traditionally been bought and made largely by kids and young adults. Kids and young adults of the 90s mainly grew up in the 80s. Crack and the Section 8 program showed blacks growing up in the 80s much more of violence, gangs and drug dealing than it did upliftment. The X-clan and P.E. are results of the 70s. NWA and Ice T are results of the 80s. All the bigwigs are trying to do is make paper.

I'm white and grew up in Albuquerque...so needless to say I had no idea, as a kid, what X-Clan was talking about. I still fell in love with them and this is one of my favorite tracks ever.
