Season 1, episode 6

It was late into Sunday afternoon when Taylor finally woke up. She opened her eyes slowly, blinking in the bright sunlight. So, this was Seattle? Wasn't it supposed to be all rain, all the time? She sighed a little as she closed her eyes again and rolled over, wishing she was home. It'd been less than 48 hours since she'd left LA and she was already homesick.

{Chord}, Taylor thought, looking at her phone. She had a few texts from him as well as a few from Abby, and as Taylor made her way through them, writing lengthy replies on the small keyboard, Patrick walked into the room. He stopped by the foot of her make-shift bed, scratching his head. "Good morning," he said with a bright smile on his face.

"Hi, dad," Taylor muttered, but a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. It was just impossible to be upset around her dad, he was so happy all the time. She didn't understand how he could be, being a doctor. Weren't doctors always sad? They had to deliver bad news all the time.

"So I was thinking," Patrick began as he sat down next to his daughter. "There's this really great café down a few blocks down. I passed by it on my way jogging this morning. It smells great, maybe we can go pick up uh, breakfast down there?" He asked, glancing at his watch. 3pm; they could have breakfast at 3pm if they wanted to.

Taylor smiled, it was just like her dad to go jogging to get used to a new place. "You mean Starbucks?" Taylor joked.

"No, no," Patrick said, chuckling. "It's this little café called... Janie's, I think. Run by this nice old lady, I bought a coffee from her. You'll like her," he assured. "She's one of those ladies that's everybody's grandmother. Yours and mine," he finished with a laugh.

Taylor nodded. "Okay," she agreed, pulling her hair back in a ponytail and getting up. "Just... let me get dressed," she said, poking through her duffel. "Meet you outside in 5," Taylor said to her dad. She wouldn't need much time to get ready, there was nobody to impress in Seattle anyway.

Five minutes later, the Dempsey family of two were walking into Janie's. It was a cozy little café with warm lights and colors that reminded Taylor of fall. She got the feeling that even with the blends of reds and oranges and browns, the atmosphere was still wonderful in the summer, also.

"You're back for more already?" Taylor looked up at the sound of a woman's voice, friendly. She watched as her dad made his way up to the counter, charming smile on his face.

"Hey, Janie," Patrick said, surveying the menu on the wall. "Your coffee's so good I couldn't stay away. Brought my little girl this time, too."

Janie peered around Patrick to get a good look at Taylor, a warm smile on her face. "Well, she certainly isn't little," she winked at Patrick. "What can I do for you today, sweetie?" She asked, the question directed at Taylor.

"Oh, um," Taylor said with a smile as she made her way up to the counter. "I'll have something holiday themed, anything pumpkin or fall related."

Janie nodded, writing on a piece of paper. "Have you ever had Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte? We have a version of that here, better of course," the grandma-figure said with a wink.

Patrick laughed. "Beats out Starbucks? I'm impressed. I'll take another coffee, black," he said as Janie took his order.

When Taylor received her hot drink, she wandered farther into the café, leaving her father and Janie to talk. It was nice that her dad was making some friends, she decided. Work was heavy sometimes, and it'd be nice for him to have someone to talk to other than his seventeen-year-old daughter.

Near the back of the café sat some tables and chairs nestled into a cozy looking corner. A big window let in sunlight, the blinds pulled up. Sitting right underneath the window in front of a MacBook was a boy around her age, with deep brown eyes and dark hair. He was dressed simply, a pair of jeans and a gray sweatshirt, black beanie positioned on his head. On the bridge of his noise sat a pair of wide-framed glasses, almost nerdy, but when he glanced up quickly Taylor noticed they fit his look well. She looked away after a brief millisecond of eye contact, busying herself with looking out the window and sipping her drink. When she turned back to steal another glance at him, he was back to typing furiously away at his laptop.

Yeah, I never said his name. But I don't think I have to!
