GREEN DAY stunned America on the finale of talent show AMERICAN IDOL the night of 23- May-07 with a performance of JOHN LENNON's WORKING CLASS HERO.
The punk trio's surprise appearance on the hit show was staged to promote a new album of Lennon covers, Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. The performance marked the first for any acts appearing on the charity album, which will help raise funds and awareness for Amnesty International's efforts for Darfur, Sudan.
Billie Joe Armstrong says his group chose to perform Working Class Hero on the album because "its themes of alienation, class, and social status really resonated with us."
The two-CD set, which also features Lennon covers from acts like Christina Aguilera, U2, Avril Lavigne, Snow Patrol, Lenny Kravitz and R.E.M, will be released in July (07).

green day is my favourite band and life and soul and everything but even i wouldn't compare them to the beatles or billie joe to john lennon. they're incomparable. not only are they 30-50 years apart as far as bands but they're both a completely different genre of music. both are influential and i can guarantee most bands out there today have been inspired by both green day and the beatles. i do think billie joe has a better singing voice though, completely objectively. i love this cover a lot.

Hate The Beatles. Dislike Lennon. Don't mind Green Day. Love this song. (My love of this song is not correlated with the fact Green Day have covered it).

I'll tell you now.... John Lennon would be on the stage giving this band (and anyone else) a thumbs up for playing his song. He wanted it "out there" he'd have no problem with Green Day and probably would have asked to play with them when they played it. It's the song and what it's about. Get on it!

I'm sick of all the John Lennon fans dissing Green Day. This is the best cover out there and it definately made it more popular. The Beatles and Green Day made huge contributions to music, The Beatles just made a bigger contribution. So all the John Lennon fans out there complaining about this, just remember, this song my not have been popular to this generation...
