  • I tried abunch of different ones. This was a while back I don't have machining class since i graduated High School recently. but I want it for future reference when I go to my friends shop, where he lets me use his equipment to do my own hobby projects. I just want to know what would you reccomend when working with steel

  • if you are using good carbide tips you will probably find youre not pushing it hard enough, you probably need more feed and speed, dont read too much into what you learned in class when using a manual lathe (within reason!!) just keep altering things like feed rate until the finish is how you want it,I suspect you are probably just scratching around instead of getting stuck in there mate,You could also try using a sharper edged fine finishing tool to get the desired finish on a lighter cut

  • and what sort of speed and feed are you using?

  • @meanfazer triangular (equilateral) carbide. small radius on the corner.

  • what sort of tips are you using

  • @meanfazer I would like to know because it would help me when cutting steel nad for me I always end upwith a shitty finish and knowing the proper S&F would help.

  • out of interest ,why do you need to know that?

  • Havent got a clue!!!!! it was fast though, don't like to be too technical mate ,just doing what feels right ,I do know that it would not take any more feed on the first two big cuts though!

  • What is the speed and feed (preferrably in/rev but I can convert mm/rev if i need to).
