So Said the Lighthouse Keeper by Klaatu

Words By: John Woloschuk

Music By: John Woloschuk

Lead Vocal: John Woloschuk with Terry Draper (as lighthouse keeper)

Instrumentation:

John: Piano, bass, organ, harmonium, synthesizer

Dee Long: Electric guitars, acoustic guitar

Terry Draper: Drums, percussion

Recorded At: Toronto Sound Studios & Olympic Sound Studios

Recording Period: October 1976 to April 1977 (mixed in May 1977)

Initial Release Date: September 1977 ("Hope" album)

Remarks:

The basic rhythm section (consisting of grand piano, drums, and electric guitar) was recorded at Toronto Sound Studios on October 25, 1976 with producer Terry Brown engineering. This was the last of the bed tracks to be recorded for the "Hope" album.

On January 13, 1977 a 28-piece string and woodwind section was overdubbed onto the 24-track master tape at Olympic Sound Studios (London) with arranger Doug Riley conducting. Later that same day French horns were also recorded onto this track.

The fuzz bass in the "heavy" sections was performed on a Rickenbacker 4001 bass.

The harmonium used on this track (as well as on "The Loneliest of Creatures") is an authentic pedal harmonium which was recorded inside a small enclosed vocal booth.

During February 1977, in order to meet the deadline for delivery of the master tapes to Capitol Records (which was scheduled for later that month), several weeks had to be block booked at Toronto Sound Studios with continuous recording virtually round the clock using two teams working in shifts: one team was comprised of John and producer Terry Brown, with Dee and Terry Draper making up the other working duo.

  • I'm 22 yrs old and i discovered Klaatu when i was 18. I have never heard any other music that is truly as deep as it is wide and vast , and when i say that i mean music that spoke to me on a really spiritual level. It seemed to be some of the purest musical manifestation of creation, love, harmony, and cosmic wholeness. The world needs Klaatu in their minds.

  • one of the best albums ever

  • great. Bringing back very dear memories. Those days Klatuu was called 'the new Beatles'. Mway, don't know. Just great.

  • i had this wonderfull album too. thanks to youtube and you!!!

  • Again...thanks...for putting an album I lost twenty five years ago...songs bring back memories

  • CKCU ( Carleton University's FM station) helped promote the mystery that this may be the Beatles in secret.

When I heard the album Hope I had to go out and buy it.

It still sounds great. I especially love side two.

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank You!

  • It has been real music , not mainstream products like today . Personally for me the 70s + 80s are such an easy time .

  • HOPE is my favorite album of all time !! I think I have played it over 1000 times since first picking it up 25 years ago this week!!! Many of my songs written and recorded and released have been influenced by Klaatu (my favorite Canadian band ever) and yes I checked them out in the first place because of The Beatles connection

  • Thank God for YouTube...bringing me Klaatu again aftier all these years...marvelous..so f'in cool, still.
