  • I mentioned the Otterbox 3000 below...the case that I modified is actually the 2000 model...the 3000 is larger (longer).

  • I have been using the triton 400 using a reel and the otter box 9000 to send it to the surface. The 400 has not only the feature to stay "on" but also can be set so the backlight stays on as well so that it is much easier to see underwater.

  • Thanks for the info., I've been toying around with modifying the Otterbox 3000. It's not quite wide enough for the Triton, and I've had problems with "coffin style" lids compressing gps switches. I cut the top out (a 1/4 " inside the raised perimeter) and epoxied a piece of 1/4" plexiglass that rests on the raised edges. I noticed Magellan has new firmware available but was not able to download at my first attempt.

  • Since posting the video, I've been testing the Magellan Triton for suitability. I set the map screen to a "go to" (bearing and distance back to the boat). I also installed one switch to depress the center button. From the map screen, depressing the button 3 times marks the last acquired position.

  • Why do you need the float and the reel? Why not just make the otter box float enough that it goes back to the surface on its own? Seems like extra hardware for no real reason? Unless you absolutely want or need a flag. It is interesting however.

  • Very interesting concept! My dive computer software shows a graph of my dive profile on a scale of depth vs. time. The location is missing. Would like to build one. Have an old Cobra GPS and it retains the last location on the display when it loses signal. Have a few questions: Where did you find the self retracting reel? Where do you find waterproof button actuators to penetrate the case? Also, what is the purpose of the two "corrugated decks" siting on each side of the reel? Thanks.

  • Thanks Mark!
