The prevalence rate of children and adolescents with mental health illnesses is staggering. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 20% of the nations children have a diagnosable mental illness; this equates to one in five children and adolescents having a mental health disorder.

Of youth in the juvenile justice systems, 60% have at least one mental disorder. Community based treatment services (in place of treatment while incarcerated) are often less expensive and more effective in rehabilitating and individual and helping to prevent future crime.
