@TMStopmotion yes you can, i have done it multiple times, its alot easier with the video because everything is from the same jump you just have to pause the video and take a screenshot of the point you paused it at, it is also alot easier with a mac though because they have built in screenshot software and you can choose the part of it you want to take

@GodsAnEmo Sony a55 will easily get the job done at 10fps full resolution shots. The a33 is a cheaper alternative that shoots at 7fps. They are both under 750 now.
is this the full version of gimp and could I do this on my Mac?

@GodsAnEmo best and cheapest, that is two different things. best is a nikon d3s, cheapest is a point and shoot that can do 4fps minimum.

@TMStopmotion if you have taken the video frames at a fast enough speed to freeze the sportsman in mid action, also the video files might be quite small, but perfectly possible
