The South African National Roads Agency, Ltd (SANRAL) announced the conversion of the William Nicol interchange on the N1 to operate as a single point system andwas finalised on 22 March 2010.

A single point interchange has a central traffic signal in the centre of the bridge that spans across the freeway. All traffic movements through the interchange are controlled at this traffic signal. The attached diagram schematically indicates the new layout of the interchange and how traffic movements will take place once the interchange is opened on 22 March 2010. Traffic movements will be considerably different from the existing arrangement at the William Nicol interchange once the single point system is operation. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, reduce speeds and observe posted road signs.
