Fremd Wins in 4th OT

2008 State Playoffs - Fremd HS scores with 2 minutes left to send the game to overtime, then scores this beautiful golden goal in the 4th overtime to win the game. However, the ref calls offsides in error denying Fremd a chance of getting back to the state finals for the 2nd year in a row. Notice the player from Hersey (in orange) clearly heads the ball backwards towards her own goal off the Fremd free kick. Anyone with a minimal understanding of soccer rules knows this negates offsides. The video does not lie. You won the game Fremd!!

4th overtime, golden goal situation, game over.  The ref even admitted his error and apologized to Fremd. This video is now being used as an IHSA training video.

I was a soccer referee for over 20 years and don't know either of the teams involved in this play. The players in white, although in the off-sides position, are not offsides. Big difference. I'm sure the player in orange wanted to head the ball away from her own goal off the free kick, but she make a play on the ball. The ball was not played by a teammate in white. Law 11 addresses this situation. The goal should have counted.

anyone catch the italy v netherlands game today?? Van Nistelrooy appears to be offside, but the ref doesnt call it and the dutch go up 2-0. what the referee says goes. you think the italian are going to slave over the tapes and bitch about how the guy was offside? questionable calls were made countless times in the sectional game. if the ref wouldnt have called a weak foul right outside the box in the last two minutes, then the game would have been won by hersey outright.

US Soccer Rules: The deflection by the opponent does not change the fact that the player in the offside position gained an advantage from his position and was therefore actively involved in play.
