I might note that Russia stock market has dropped more than %50 percent. Officials have shut down trading in Moscow to try to keep it from slipping further. Putin told the Russian news media not to say anything about Russia's financial troubles, which are much worse than the US's. They followed orders as usual.

Didn't you see the movie with Tom Hanks stuck in the airport when his country crumbled? This country might be finished being the best country on earth, but it will continue on, getting steadily worse. Only when the majority of the citizens stand up as one to fight the abuses of power will the country be finished in its current form. It will most likely be broken into smaller countries; kinda like USSR did.

good point, I think it should be noted however that ALL major empires collapsed primarily because of their economies and later their militaries. Greece, Egypt, Rome. all of these were NOT economic powers until hundreds of years later. The roman fall sent W. Europe in to the dark ages.

Most likely the U.S.A. will fall like Britain, gradually while retaining much of its prowess.

A few years ago the Russia businessmen lived in the 3 star hotels and the American lived in the 5 star hotel. Now it's the complete opposite, The Russian is enjoying new wealth whilst Americans are forced to live modestly.

As their buying power plummets other nations will have their currency strengthened and they will take the American void. The Federal Reserve has destroyed America through inflation.

Eventually, all great societies lose their hegemony, but they continue to exist, e.g. Greece and Egypt. By the end of this century, the United States may no longer be the supreme power, but she will still be a force in the world. Actually, I believe that the more likely scenario will be the destruction of all civilizations upon the earth through environmental catastrophe, and or political corruption. Collective suicide through the stupidity of the human race, is a real possibility.
