John Waters was hoping the reactions by the people on the street would be more extreme when this was shot, but apart from some stares, they were too tactful to react strongly. He wrote that he later assumed that they just all thought Divine was some insane person, and it would be better not to respond to her.
Nowadays we're more accustomed to such sights in big cities, but not back then.

You can tell that this is the 1970's by the people looking at Divine with their big beautiful afro's. It's a shame that black men shave their heads these days when their hair is so beautiful. Divine had guts and was brave enough not to care what people thought of her.
