Miramonte High girls basketball coach Kelly Sopak wasn't sure where his team stacked up with the top local ones entering Friday's contest against visiting Dougherty Valley. After all, only four of the Matadors' first 13 games were against East Bay squads.
After a 49-42 victory over the Wildcats, who are ranked seventh in the Bay Area News Group East Bay girls basketball poll, Sopak has reason to smile.
"I told the team this week this would be a true test of where we're at," said Sopak, whose team is ranked eighth. "At the end of the game the kids stepped up, and that was great to see."
Miramonte (11-3, 2-0 Diablo Foothill Athletic League) took the lead to stay on a 3-pointer by Kristine Miller with 16 seconds left in the first half. But that didn't tell the whole story of this competitive game.
The Matadors held a 42-28 lead with 3:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Dougherty Valley (11-2, 0-1) went on a 14-3 run to draw within 45-42 on a free throw by Treyvonna Brooks with 1:04 remaining. The Wildcats were shut out the rest of the game, however, and Miramonte scored the final four points on one free throw apiece by Alyssa Johanson and Liza Katz and a converted offensive rebound by Miller with 22.3 seconds left.
Johanson paced the Matadors with 12 points, and Stephanie Golden added 10. Dougherty Valley received a team-high 10 points from Rayven Brooks, a transfer from Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco.
