How many times do you have a slice of pizza or two with a pop and think, "Meh, it was only 2 slices and a pop"? Even worse is when you actually try to eat healthy by ordering a salad, topped with pecans and cheese. You'll be surprised to read that your "healthy" salad may actually contain just as many calories as the pizza and pop!

Not to worry though because you were planning to go for a run to burn those calories off, right? Well, I hope you planned to run 20-30k!

The point I'm trying to convey is that it's incredibly easy to mindlessly consume calories, but painfully difficult to burn them off. So try to be more conscious of what you're eating. Diet will always win against exercise!

Metabolism and weight gain are frequently misunderstood. For instance, a common perception many people have of weight gain is that it is associated with a slow metabolism, but in actuality, a side effect of gaining weight is an increase in your metabolic rate. That's right, the more weight you gain, the harder your metabolism works, and the more calories you burn.

Conversely, the lighter you are, the slower your metabolism works, and therefore, the more activity required by you to burn the same number of calories.

What does this mean?

It means that losing weight is simple physics, not your metabolism as the media frequently advertises.

So what can we do?

Stop using your metabolism as an excuse for your weight gain and start looking at your workouts, diet, and lifestyle to find where exactly you can make a difference.

How many times have you heard that spreading 5-6 small meals out over the course of the day can actually help you lose weight?

The number of meals you eat in a day doesn't matter. It's just more media hogwash. What matters is how many calories you consume in a day. There's no magic to how often you eat and how much weight you'll lose. The real magic is in consuming fewer calories than your body burns.

So, whether you skip breakfast, eat 6 meals a day, or eat a late meal at night, don't lose sleep over it because you can still lose weight. What you need to do is examine your lifestyle and see what works for you. Do that while consuming fewer calories and you'll see results!

  • Haha. You have hit the nail on the head. What are your thoughts about training like the goal weight. For example, I'm 208 and I want to be 185/190 so should I eat/train like my goal weight?
