Portobelo is a small town, close to the Panama canal. It is one of the oldest Spanish settlements on the Caribbean coast and once was the center of the Spanish Main. The Bay of Portobelo was discoverecd by Christopher Columbus Nov. 2, 1502, however it wasn't until the sixteenth century that the area gained importance. From this port tons of gold and silver flowed to Seville, Spain, the commercial capital of the Spanish empire.
