A POIGNANT TRIBUTE TO THE END OF AN ERA.

1984 - SEASON 7 - EPISODE 6

Jonah's (Lee Sparke) cousin Jeremy is back from suspension and is already annoying the rest of the class. Annette gets invited to the finals of the modelling competition at lunchtime -- but Mr Howard & Miss Gorgon say no. Annette is annoyed but the other girls, Mandy & Sarah especially, have no sympathy. Zammo gets a postcard from Jonah from Wales which Roland translates for the class. Julie has another moan at Jeremy for trying to pretend Jonah hadn't gone to Wales as if he knew something they didn't. During biology, the class dissect a rat. Most of them can't watch -- Jeremy starts making fun of them, irritating everyone again. Afterwards, he puts it in the cupboard and also hides Diane's bag there too. When she can't find it, he directs her to the cupboard so she sees the rat and screams. Jeremy is sent to Mr Howard. When he jokes about it at lunch, they all walk off in disgust. Julie has to take Diane home so Annette takes the opportunity to sneak out with them and go to the competition. But when she turns up, there are hundreds of girls and they laugh at her in school uniform. She returns to school in time for their swimming lesson -- but refuses to get changed. At the swimming pool Jeremy is trying to be friends again but the boys ignore him. When they are told to clear the pool while the teachers are away, he throws Fay's bangle into the pool and goes in to show off and retrieve it -- Zammo goes in to try and take his trunks off to shut him up. But Jeremy has passed out under water. Zammo raises the alarm and Mr Devereux dives in to get him. They get rid of the kids and he & Baxter try to revive him -- but it's no good. As they give up, Zammo (Lee MAcDonald)is watching distraught as Jeremy dies.

  • This really works well with the music also brings back some great memories for me! Lee.

  • This clip still haunts me now, 20 so years latter. Watching it back then this wasn't expected and was quite shocking to watch and still very much is now too. It scared me from going swimming and i still can't swim now. Thanks for the upload

  • @dazzyboy74 Was that what happened? I thought one of the girls dropped something into the deep end of the pool and dared him to fetch it.

  • @UKTVClassics copy and pasted ur message U sent me :p

  • @UKTVClassics Series 5 and 6 are my favourites of all series - I was pissed off when they killed off Jono.

Lee Sparke who played Jone read series 7 of the script and, when he found the script writers were killing him off, he was disgusted and did not agree to come back to series 7. For this reason most of series 7 had to be re-written and the part was played by Jermey, his cousin, who later drowned in the swimming pool. This is what Jono refused!

  • 26 years on and the screams still hit like a bolt of lightning. I too remember where I was when this episode was screened - getting a meal ready in my flat in Military Road, Colchester. I stopped everything to watch this.

  • What, actually happened to Jeremy can I ask

  • Exactly. I remember at my school we were not allowed go into the gym or even poolside as we had to wait in changing rooms until a teacher gave us the go ahead or the science labs for that matter. In fact Miss hartly shud've told em not go near the pool or let someone be there

  • just watchin this is sending shivers down me spine

  • did he die?
