FDA is taking action against companies that market unapproved drugs containing hydrocodone, a controlled substance. Hydrocodone is a narcotic widely used as an analgesic in approved products such as Vicodin. It is also used as a cough suppressant. The vast majority of these antitussive products have not been approved.

Despite its potential for medical benefit, hydrocodone is a potentially lethal drug of abuse. Overdose can lead to cardiac arrest, coma and respiratory failure. FDA is particularly concerned about the use of unapproved hydrocodone cough medicines in children. No hydrocodone cough suppressant has been shown safe and effective for children under six, and yet some of these unapproved products have dosing instructions for children as young as two.

Also, FDA has received reports of medication errors associated with changes in the formulation of unapproved hydrocodone products, as well as name confusion between approved and unapproved ones.

There are seven FDA-approved antitussives that contain hydrocodone, and a variety of other approved cough suppressants without it. Providers should be certain that the antitussives they recommend to their patients are FDA-approved.

  • @Butown hydromet sux it has homatropine in it and that curves the peak high you can get. it is put in hydromet where people cant take too much.

  • @lennymo36 also, they took off these off the market also, codiclear, mytussin hc, rutuss with hc, vycotuss, status green, hydrotuss, notuss pd, histussin hc, there are lots more i have tried but you get the picture. now we have tussionex which has always been the best. also still on the market is hycotuss and hydromet but those 2 have something called homatropine in the syrup and it stops you from getting that peak high that so many are trying to get. so hucotuss and hydromet suck!

  • they took 98% of all the hrdrocodone cough syrups off the market!!! only 2or 3 remain, thank goodness they left tussionex alone. tussionex is the strongest out of the thousands of hc syrups. not codeine only hydrocodone. codeine sux!!!!!! here are some of the ones i have used they no longer make, some containg 5mg of hc pre teaspoon, some have 2.5mg per tsp, like atuss ms,atusshd, endal hd, quendal hd plus, pv tussin, polytussin, duratuss hd, pancof hc pancof xp, pneumotussin hc, tuss ds,

  • its all about hydromet

  • this is bullshit

they can say all this ish about hydrocone no no bad for kids but then hand out methamphetamines to kids for ADHD or ADD under the name DESOXYN check in out all the active ingredent is methamphetamine

  • @ticks4ticks4 i realize this. ive taken tussinex and the other stuff for bronchitus. diddnt know there was a formula with dilaudid in it.....cause usually dilaudid is only IV. 8mg dilaudid pill form isnt very soluble.

  • @dillononeill123 Hycodan is also a prescription cough syrup containing hydrocodone. (Alternatively, there is Dilaudid-HP cough syrup. The "HP" stands for

"high potency". This is not frequently prescribed, though.)
