Minnie is a female chimpanzee who resides at the San Francisco Zoo. She shares her enclosure with one male, Coby, and two other females, Maggie and Tallulah. Minnie is probably in her forties, and has resided at the Zoo for 35 years. Like the other two female chimps, Minnie began her life as a home raised pet. Most chimps who begin life this way are eventually turned over to zoos or sanctuaries once they become sexually mature (usually around 8 years of age) given that their large size and physical strength, compounded by the hormonal changes of puberty, make them potentially dangerous and unpredictable. Minnie was fortunate to be placed with a zoo rather then suffer the fate of some chimpanzees that are sold to the bio-medical research community for use in animal experiments.
Minnie is the smallest of the chimpanzees living at the San Francisco Zoo. She is often seen alongside Maggie. In the video, you can see Minnie grooming Maggie, which is an important social and bonding activity of chimpanzees.
The filming took place February 8th, 9th and 12th of 2009. The video is designed to show the typical daily behavior found among this group of chimpanzees.
