schooners are great. and fast considering the wumpy aerodynamics. Most of the force a fore-aft rig creates is sideways, which is negated by the keel and turned largely into the heeling effect. the leading edge curve creates most of the forward force, hence "tall" sails for maximum leading edge vs cord. correct me if i'm wrong though.
you can't sail directly upwind, you can get around 45deg off the wind before it becomes futile. this is what's known as tacking, that's why sailboats zigzag, they change thei direction by 90 deg every so often when sailing against the wind in order to move forward (albeit slowly) to their destination.
This is the Lettie G. Howard! I was aboard during this filming.
CommonSenseYo - You'll have to look it up to see some diagrams. Essentially the sails act as wings and generate sideways lift, pulling the vessel sideways. The shape of the bottom of the boat redirect the energy forwards>
Watching this just made me very homesick..I had just left Gloucester a week before..My father , lives there and is involved w/the restoration of Adventure
how much does a small schooner cost? thx
