i used to live here until 2000 and back then they didn't have a subway. when i went back there in 2007 i was impressed by the new subway. clean, and very fast. since there are no doors between cars you can easily spot a less crowded space. you can literally see the end of the train from the other end if the track is straight. also they use electronic(RFID?) reusable tokens so they dont waste paper on tickets.
i ride the dc metro every day. the reason the subways in korea are clean is because they invest in switching out the cars more often and there is an ethos of keeping the cars clean (no news papers thrown about etc). as you can see, everything is brightly lit and its made to fit as many people as possible, not so that more people can sit. also NO CARPETING! finally, korea doesn't have a problem with young hoodlums screwing up your car and making the ride unenjoyable.
