For me he is the best Don José as well... he does make you feel sorry for an otherwise shmuck of a character. And his singing of this aria is the best I've ever heard- past or present. He caresses the words and notes. He is powerful when he should be and tender when it should be. I have always loved the quality of his voice- while he may have pused his voice into heavier roles too early, I will always cherish the wonderful singing that Maestro Carreras has given us.

Everyone has something to contribute to this world and Senor Carreras perhaps more than most. He doesn't just sing the notes, there is much more than this and if we can't feel this then 'tant pis pour nous' -don't blame the singer, blame yourselves. I, for one, won't wait until the maestro is not around to appreciate what one human being can give to another with the mastery of their voice. Mr Carreras, for me, you are the best.

On the high Bb-flat he pushes and a wobble is on the way of developing. He was 37-38 years old here, If he would have stayed in the lyrical fach up until at least 40 his voiced would have stayed beautyfull much longer then it did. A tenor shouldn´t be at his best between 25-30 years of age as it was for Carreras and Di Stefano, two of the most beautyfull tenorvoices ever recorded.

one word-- perfect

Josep is for me the greatest tenor in the world. His voice does not go to the ears, head directly to a soul!! I love it! Even today, his concerts, the interpretation is absolutely unique!

En esta grabación no canta falsetto al final y resulta muy bonita también

Carreras is all heart. This aria fits him better than most. I listen to his recording of this aria at least once a week. Its so nice to see a video of him in his prime. check out my recording of this aria. Feel free to comment

@novice1959 Josep's voice possesses a richness in tone that is his own, and very consistent. If I had to compare any other voice with a similar richness - and that is the gift they were born with - only Marilyn Horne comes to mind. I believe Josep picked the best roles for his voice. (For instance Francisco Araiza's performance of Mozart's "UN' AURA AMOROSA" is lustrous.Perfect, posted on youtube. It is the best I've ever heard and perfect for Araiza's voice.)
suits his voice perfectly.

Carrreras is the ideal Don Jose for me.
As well as singing the role flawlessly, he gave an otherwise unappealing character charm and grace, how ever he managed it.
