Paratroopers of the 503rd RCT mop up enemy resistance on Corregidor Island, February-March 1945. General MacArthur makes his triumphant return for the flag-raising ceremony.
@TominTucson50 after March 22nd the island was under continual bombardment perhaps. There might be practical reasons the flag was not ceremonially raised between March 22 and the surrender in May.
That flag pole is still there, they call it the spanish flag pole, it's old, its the same one I just saw in this video, the old lighthouse was destroyed and rebuilt, the island sitts pretty much as it was in 1945, there is a hotel out there and a few buildings the rest is the way it was, it's an amazing place, if you ever get a chance go and see it, the ferry leaves from the old hover ferry terminal by the cultural center of the philippines.
My step dad was a member of the 503rd. He was T/5 Frank Arrigo and a PFC put our Flag back up on Corregidor under sniper fire. The original flag pole was a wooden like a telegraph pole.
"OLD GLORY" was still flying through the first week of May 42. The narrator said it was taken down 22nd of March 42 ? Gen Wainwright did not surrender the island til May 42. I believe.
My uncle, Rollin Calvin Ammerman was a 19 year old paratrooper with the 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team. He was somewhere in this film although I could not see him. He passed away some years ago. He tried to tell me what it was like. Now, thanks to this film and others on YouTube I better understand. Bless you Rollin and rest in peace.
