April 2008
Long thought of as a secluded paradise hidden deep in the Himalayas, and renowned for its pursuit of happiness over economic prosperity, Bhutan now struggles to accommodate the invasion of tourists, new media and western materialism in the twenty first century.

As monks play with condoms, clowns offer advice on AIDS and farmers feed cannabis to pigs, we hear the thoughts of Government officials, Buddhist monks, tourists and ordinary Bhutanese themselves, as they face up to the challenge to the underlying spiritualism of this mystical country and its rapidly changing identity in an internet shrunk world.

  • gross national happiness, over gross national product?!! im all for it!!!!

  • I respect the values of these people, butbeing attached to your culture, identity, tradition, happiness, pride and values nhas never brought happiness to anyone. If you are so attached to your image, that image will certainly be hurt by someone who does not value it. I tried it all. All those values are material, if you look at it from an enlightened point of view.

  • @journeymanpictures A tiny country with 1/6 of its population refugee is the a Happiest country?

What about the totalitarian practice of King over our Sharshop community. Every thing he enforced from language to dress-code, from religion practice to culture.

And you mean gross national happiness?

Please, come and visit here in East and assure our people you would not spy the king and the government about what they said, and you will know the real story behind. People just scare to express.

  • @thekilleroftheday bitch i will murder u if i saw you... u motherfucker ugly ass..

  • Bhutan tortured over 100,000 Bhutanese citizens and threw them out of the country in early 1990s and it has not taken them back until now. But the world is so fucked up that it STILL thinks Bhutan deserves to be called a peaceful country!!! where did humanity go, humans?

  • @thekilleroftheday ..Bhutan Dont have president..i worked there for eight years.if u dont know abt this country its sure u are just a brat in hea...i dont want those criminals who where rightly sent out of This beautifull country in my country...and i know the reasons those people where sent out ..they burnt down schools, murdered officials, rejected the identity they now say is theirs also..guess u r one of them.. HMMmmm from USA

  • The president of Bhutan is racist, he kicked all the Nepalese speaking Bhutanese out of bhutan to Nepal. I will be laughing out loud when the racist bastard will be burned in hell. And for other racist Bhutanese, don't try to correct me cause u know that you and the president is racist.

  • You have to see it to believe it. Please don't make comments without understanding the how and what Bhutan is! Bhutan is truly a happy Place :)

  • interesting but why are not Christians allowed to practice in Bhutan i think there anotherside to this country there is no upthoia in this world

  • Well, Happiness and Bhutan. What a big joke? This is one of the country in the world who saying a Buddhist philosophical country, dragged about 100, 000 people from its country who were living in that country since last 40 years. They tortured, and killed many of those who do not speak bhutanese language. Now, those people are accepted by US, Canada, and Australia as migrant who were forced to live a hard hard life in refugee camps of Nepal. Oh Buddha, peace peace.

  • @mrcuteblackie Wow you got it so wrong
