When Jacqueline Susann (the book's writer) saw the very first film footage ("rushes") from "Valley of the Dolls" she ran out of the screening room sobbing. What she witnessed (in her words) was a "big piece of commerical crap." I read the book a few times, and saw the movie several more times, and I have to say she got it exactly right. Oh, the film certainly has its fascination - and this is why we are still talking about it 45 years after its release. The book was great - "Jackie's" best.
