Ever wondered what a V8 engine looks like on the inside when running?

This partially built engine was driven by a variable speed 3Hp AC motor. The highest speed shown is around 800RPM

There is plenty of oil pressure; the 'knocking' sound is actually air chuffing in and out of the cylinders.. no spark plugs are fitted!

  • That's an Oldsmobile engine right? Judging from just the rocker arm bridges and the water pump it looks like it.

  • @NZDC69 Its a GM engine from way back in 1974. Sold here in Australia under the "Holden" brand, I'm not familiar with Oldsmobile, but if Oldmobile is related to GM, then there could be a link. BTW, Holden also used Chev 350 engines back then around that time too. Thanks for looking and commenting.

  • wow this video is very cool!!! I;m doing marine diesel machanics course and i'm deff. going to get my teacher to show this to the class A++ on the vid for sure man!

  • @DWOODY12 Thanks for the feedback. This is not my usual profession, I did it to learn something new for myself... by all means, use it it in your class as you please. Let me know how it goes. Cheers! Max

  • @BigMaxTube They loved it, how are you cranking this engine over anyways air compressor or somethijg? lol

  • @DWOODY12 Very pleased to hear that your class enjoyed my vid. It was driven with an electric motor. See my other post of the same engine with no heads @1000RPM. You can see the electric drive motor there. Cheers!

  • cool vid,had my kids watch it,they understand now!

  • Interesting vid!

Yes, you would have to leave the sparkplugs out spinning it with a 3 horse motor. It would use more power than that when compressing the air in the 4 cylinders with the head attached. However they would operate somewhat like a bumper cylinder, as you would get most of the energy back when the compressed air helps to push the piston back down.

The open pistons would throw a lose penny out in a big hurry!

  • @LFiers My WB statesman idles at about 750-850. You should just bite the bullet and get a new good quality battery, check the charge rate of your alternator (should be around 13.5V with engine running), you'll be much better off in the long run.

  • That V8 is making more power as is then a Honda 4 banger at 10,000 RPM LOL.

  • Throw a penny in the cylinder...

  • Very cool video. LOVE it!

  • Sounds like a steam engine.

  • Stick your hand in there.

  • Damn the pistons already look nasty at 800 rpm...

  • Awesome video.
