For the first time, here is my private collection of WFIL airchecks. October 6 - 7, 1980: Tom Dooley in for Joe Simone with a WPHL commercial; November 1980 jingle; March 1981 Barbara Summers; March 1981 Joe Simone; September 3 - 4, 1981. Dick Fennessy. Also John Jeffries the morning when WFIL turned country. Recorded locally. MORE TO COME!!!
On the eve of their format change to country, WFIL ran promos saying that WFIL as you have known it since 1966 will be a thing of the past. This was not true. WFIL's "Boss Jock" finally died in 1977 when they migrated to an AC format. This aircheck clip indicates that they started a "Come Home to WFIL" promotion in early 1981 which remained until their change to country in September 1981.
560 changed to the Beautiful Music format in the early 90s with WEAZ and WBEB calls but called themselves WISH 560

Yes, it's the end of an era as the Boss Jock of Philadelphia changes formats. Wow!

Thanks for posting. This was a sad time during my tenure at "Famous 56" as so many good friends lost their jobs in the dreadful format change to country and the move to "combo boards." Management nearly decided to move the call letters and rock format to FM (WUSL at the time) but WCAU's "Hot Hits" already filled that niche. Too bad, as a legendary radio station could have had new life with "no static at all.".
